In Tales of Earthsea, Ursula K. Le Guin wrote something along the lines of this: The more powerful the sorcerer, the more limited the choices he must make. (I am badly recalling the quote, but "the more we awaken, the less free will we have" reminded me of it.) Also, Madeleine L. Engle in A Swiftly Tilting Planet, tells of the need to root, to limit locomotion, in order to bring life. Both books are fictional stories, but I hold both as true.
